Glenmore Reservoir

Glenmore Reservoir is located in urban Calgary, and is a part of the Elbow River system. It is actually a large dam used for the cities drinking water and flood control. It is a super popular place (and rightfully so) for all manner of watercraft, from kayaks and canoes to sailboats, rowing teams and more.

As of the time of writing (June 17th, 2015) SUP boards and inflatable kayaks ARE NOT PERMITTED on the reservoir.


  • Cell Reception: Good cell reception at all times
  • Emergency Access/Egress: There is a walking trail going most of the way around the lake so in most areas emergency egress is straightforward
  • Trip Length: 2 - 4 hours
  • Family Friendly: YES! (be aware of weather)
  • Water Temperature: Cold for most of the paddling season (swimming is not permitted in the reservoir.
  • Weather Considerations: Wind is often a factor on Glenmore (particularly evenings), be aware of rapid onset thunderstorms in the summer months
  • Suitable for: Kayak and Canoe
  • Local Knowledge: If you have the time a paddle up to the weaselhead (mouth of the Elbow river) is a super cool trip with some great bird and wildlife spotting

Put In

There are a number of access points:

  • 1 - Heritage Park Marina: Find your way to 14th Street SW and take the turnoff (West) onto Heritage Drive, from here drive to the marina, unload your kayak and park in one of the many spots in the nearby lot
  • 2 - South Glenmore Park: Located at the north end of 24th St SW. You can access it from the south by getting onto 24th St SW and following it (north) all the way to the end. Coming from the North get onto 14th St SW and turn right (west) on to 90th Ave SW, then take a right into the park at 24th St SW.


Urban lake with good fishing and great paddling opportunities close to town.

Length & Time

Lake is 4.1 kms long, great for short outings and half day trips

NA - Sometimes there are closures due to water levels and other safety concerns. Check in at 311 or to check.
