Barrier Lake

A man made reservoir located at the north end of Kananaskis Country and has a dam at the northern end which feeds the Kananaskis river.

Great for kayaks, canoes and SUP but dress up warm, water temperature generally stays low all year round.

Jewell Bay Backcountry Campground is located 4 km (western side) from the dam which is a sweet place if your keen on a over-night trip.

Stunning views of the mountains with Mt Baldy bordering the eastern side.

Put In

From Calgary - Drive west on highway 1. Take the Kananaskis Country turn off onto highway 40. Turning left and driving back over the highway in 9km you will see the first barrier lake carpark entrance on the right (just before you go past the lake). However the better entrance to launch boats/boards is the second entrance, another 1.5km down the road also on the right which has a boat launch.

From Kananaskis village - get onto highway 40 from town. Head North for 12 km then lake the left turn off to access the lake and the boat launch.
